Our figure of the month: Latent risk of German exports

What is known as Hermesdeckung offers exporting firms the opportunity to bail their export businesses. In this context, countries are being classified with respect to their guarantee to pay back their credit. This classification ranges from 0 to 7 whereby higher ranked countries hold a higher risk.

Based on this information, Germany’s export flows to its main trading partners are being valued and integrated in the world trade model TINFORGE. Each export share of a trading partner to total German exports was weighed with the corresponding country-specific risk index. The index shown in the diagram pictures the development of the total risk-weighted export of Germany. The total index increased over time.
