Our figure of the month 03/2018: Wholesale turnover increases, but not for all wholesale sections
Total wholesale turnover (prior notification) increases by 1.1% in 2016 compared to 2015. Only the sections wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco, wholesale of household goods as well as wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies support the positive development.
Compared to 2015, wholesale turnover (prior notification) in Germany increases by 1.1% in 2016 and reaches an absolute level of 1,313 billion Euro. The subsections of the wholesale sector develop differently.
The strongest increase is recorded for the wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (46.3) with 4.6%, followed by wholesale of household goods (46.4) with 4.4% and wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (46.6) with 3.5%. The positive economic development supported by the buying mood of the consumers and the raising investment confidence of the companies explain this trend amongst others. The major players in the wholesale sector are sector 46.3 and 46.4 with 21% respectively 25% of the total wholesale turnover. Both wholesale groups foster the growth in turnover significantly.
Bigger sales losses are shown in the subsection non-specialised wholesale trade (46.9, -4.4%), wholesale of agricultural raw materials, live animals (-3.3%) as well as other specialised wholesale (46.7, -2.7%). The latter with the biggest share (about 36%) comprises the wholesale of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and related products. The influence of decreasing energy prices can be seen here. The subsection other specialised wholesale involves – measured as a share of total turnover – the biggest amount with 30% and dampened the growth in the total wholesale turnover.
